I was writing my post and was about half way through when I realized I was more or less re-writing the Maclean's article. I did other research as well and the article in Maclean's is very good so I decided to link to it instead. While the article is a bit longer than most people are used to reading when they go to a blog, it is very good and I highly suggest you read the entire thing if this topic is of any interest to you. And please forward this on to any friends/family member who you think might be interested. Maclean's article " Our girls are not guinea pigs"   

However, I have included a list of highlights and comments below.

-VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System - a national database sponsored by the FDA and Centre for Disease Control in the US) has had 1,637 complaints concerning Gardasil since May 2007.

-There have been many really bad reactions, including seizures, paralysis and 3 deaths. One of these deaths was caused by a blood clot three hours after receiving the vaccine. All deaths are being written off as having other causes. In my opinion, deaths in otherwise healthy young girls shortly after having a vaccine (and vaccines in general have a huge history of controversy and many cases of severe reactions and deaths occurring in otherwise healthy children, shortly after injection) is highly suspicious.

-In Australia, 26 girls fainted and had mild paralysis after the vaccine.

-Abby Lippman, an epidemiologist at McGill University: "Usually at this stage in the life span of a vaccine we would not have this kind of action. We're making guesses that it's going to last long, that we're immunizing the right age and that it's effective. We don't have a solid basis for this thought."

-Canadian Women's Health Network: concern due to the fact that the study done on the vaccine only tracked the girls for 5 years. Cervical cancer takes at least a decade to develop.

-New England Journal of Medicine: published a study in May that has shown "imperfect compliance" could reduce Gardasil's reported efficacy of 70% down to just 17%! (more details about this in the article)

-Hans Krueger is a health care consultant and has advised various organizations, including the B.C. Cancer Agency, on the vaccine:"That's one more reason we should be slowing down...we just don't know enough." In the article Krueger states that his daughter won't be getting the vaccine just yet.

-There is the possibility that other strains of HPV, not covered by the vaccine but which can still cause cervical cancer, will move in and take over the "territory" left behind by the vaccinated-against strains. These other strains are currently responsible for 30 percent of cervical cancers but this has the potential to increase by an unknown amount.

If you were not aware that vaccines are controversial, then let me be the first to inform you that they are. Highly. Besides the additives/contaminants in many of them (eg. formaldehyde, mercury) the fact is that there is a lot we still don't know about the human immune system. Personally, as a very young child, I developed recurring seizures that my parents think began after a vaccine. Thankfully, I outgrew them, but not before turning blue and having stopped breathing more than once. Incidentally, seizures and seizure disorders have been l linked to vaccines. My example is just one of many. I will be writing more about this in the future and am considering writing an e-book on this topic as well.

There is a lot of information that many people are not aware of. The most important thing is not whether you choose to vaccinate your children (or yourself for that matter) but that you make an informed decision that you are comfortable with. Unfortunately doctors do not always present their patients with both sides of the story and therefore people are not able to make informed decisions; most people are not even aware that there is another side to the story. Since many young girls will be up for this vaccine once they are in school this September, the above linked article is essential reading.

Side note: There are some parents who, having already vaccinated their children/daughters, would rather not read this information because they are afraid they will feel guilty for having done it.
