Maternity leave duration and child development

I would like to preface this post by clearly stating that I am not including this information in order to ignite a sociological debate. This is information is not intended to make working moms feel judged or to praise stay-at-home moms. It is just information and the most important thing is that you make an informed decision.

A recent study at the University of British Columbia by pediatrician Dr. Rebecca Sherlock has shown that if a mother's maternity leave is too brief, the baby's motor and social development are more likely to be impaired. With every extra month of leave, the chance of impairment dropped by 3%. For mothers who took at least 24 months off, there was no link to developmental impairments; with any period shorter than this there were.
